prime selling system™ blog series

This blog is for the owner-operator whose business is so dependent on them that if they leave for even a weekend …

… Sales stop.

What we’re about to discuss may completely change how you think about business growth …

… And your role in creating it.

What if your business could consistently generate prospects and sales independent of you?

What would change if sales continued while you were on vacation …

… Or even if you became sick or injured and couldn’t work?

PART 1 of 3:
Sales Independent of You

Prime Selling System - Part 1

One of our clients suffered a back injury that prevented her from working inside her business for a year.

But because of the systems we’re about to discuss …

… Her business continued selling independent of her and generated more than six figures in sales.

What would that kind of independence make possible for you?

Could you serve your existing clients at a higher level?

Focus on important projects?

Spend more time with your family?

Travel?

Or take time off whenever you choose?

What would sales, independent of you, give back to your life?

The Stop-and-Go Problem

For most owner-operators, that isn’t their reality right now.

Right now …

… You’re the salesperson.

Even if other people help with sales, you’re probably still the best salesperson in the business.

You’re the person who makes the cash register ring.

So, the moment you take your eye off sales …

… Sales begin to slow down.

You focus on selling, and new customers come in.

Then you have to stop selling to fulfill the work.

While you’re fulfilling the work, sales slow down.

When the work is finished, you return to selling …

… And the entire cycle begins again.

That’s the Stop-and-Go Problem™  .

It creates the feast-and-famine cycle so many owner-operators know too well.

Revenue becomes unpredictable.

Sales pressure never goes away.

You lose control of your time.

And when you try to hire a salesperson, they rarely perform at the level required to replace you.

Growth doesn’t create freedom …

… It creates more work.

That leads to the central question every owner-operator should ask:

How can you build a business independent of you when sales still depend on you?

Because you didn’t start a business so you could give yourself a sales job.

How the Prime Selling System™ Began

Hi, I’m Eric Dahl, founder of IndependentBusinessBuilder.com and creator of the Independent Business Method™.

Sales is where I began building my own business independence.

I was fortunate to help build an information technology business where I personally generated more than $1 million a year in sales.

Over time, I developed a sales system that became so dialed in …

… I reduced my sales involvement to approximately five hours a week.

Some weeks, I didn’t need to work at all.

My close rate reached approximately 80%.

And for the first time …

… I experienced more time freedom than I had ever had before.

The system worked so well that clients began calling me for advice about how to improve their own sales processes.

That planted the seed for what eventually became the Prime Selling System™.

I began sharing the principles and processes I had developed with my clients …

… And they began producing results of their own.

They made more sales.

They built sales teams.

They generated more revenue.

And some began breaking company sales records.

What started as the system I used to produce sales in my own business …

… Became a system other business owners and their teams could follow.

Build a Business That Sells Independent of You™

The Prime Selling System™ is Step 1 of the 12-step Independent Business Method™.

Inside the Prime Selling System™ are 12 steps organized into three phases:

Phase 1: Sales Independent of You™

Phase 2: Lead Generation Independent of You™

Phase 3: Sales System Independent of You™

Together, the three phases help you build a business that can produce prospects, customers, and revenue independent of you.

In Part 1 of this series, we’ll begin with the first four steps.

You’ll discover how to identify the right buyer …

… Package the right offer …

… Turn what you know into content that educates prospects …

… And guide those prospects through a repeatable sales process a team member can follow.

Before your business can generate leads or operate its complete sales system independent of you …

… It must first learn how to sell independent of you.

That’s where Phase 1 begins.

PHASE 1: SALES INDEPENDENT OF YOU™

Turn Random Sales Activity Into a Process
A team member Can Follow

Phase 1: Sales Independent of You™ solves the first major problem:

Your business can’t consistently turn qualified prospects into customers without you.

Until you solve that problem, everything else eventually leads back to the owner.

You can generate more leads …

… Hire a salesperson …

… Or spend more money on advertising.

But without a repeatable selling process, those investments only send more opportunities into a business that still depends on you to close them.

Before someone else can sell effectively, you must take what currently lives inside your head …

… Your knowledge of the buyer, the offer, the message, and the conversation …

… And turn it into a process another person can understand and follow.

That’s why Phase 1 comes first.

And I learned its importance after doing everything the traditional numbers-game philosophy told me to do …

Sixteen Appointments. Zero Sales.

Early in my sales career, I believed what almost everyone is taught:

Sales is a numbers game.

Make enough telephone calls.

Knock on enough doors.

Schedule enough appointments.

Eventually …

… Someone will say yes.

So, That’s exactly what I did.

During one stretch, I worked hard enough to schedule 16 sales appointments.

Sixteen opportunities to present my services.

Sixteen chances to close a deal.

Do you know how many sales I made?

Zero.

Not one person became a customer.

The Numbers-Game Answer Was More Numbers

According to the numbers-game philosophy, the solution should have been simple:

Make more calls.

Knock on more doors.

Schedule another 16 appointments.

Maybe I needed 32.

Maybe I needed 50.

Maybe if I created enough activity …

… I would eventually create a sale.

But increasing the number of appointments wouldn't have fixed the real problem.

It would have only given me more opportunities to repeat the same broken process.

The Real Problem Wasn’t Effort

I didn’t have an effort problem.

I had worked hard enough to schedule 16 appointments.

The real problem was that I didn’t have a selling process.

I didn’t clearly understand which prospects I should pursue.

My offer wasn’t packaged around one specific result.

I didn’t have a powerful way to educate prospects or establish authority before the sales conversation.

And I didn’t know how to guide a qualified prospect toward a confident decision.

Every appointment started from zero.

Every presentation depended on what I remembered to say.

Every conversation required me to improvise.

I was relying on activity …

… And hoping volume would compensate for the absence of a system.

It didn’t.

Are You Trying to Solve
a Process Problem With More Activity?

Does your current sales strategy depend on making more calls, finding more leads, or scheduling more appointments?

What would happen if you improved the process before increasing the volume?

Scroll down and type ACTIVITY or PROCESS in the comments.

Everything Changed When I
Stopped Playing the Numbers Game

Everything began to change when I stopped treating sales as a numbers game …

… And started treating it as a process.

I learned how to identify the right people.

I learned how to present the right offer.

I learned how to educate prospects before asking them to buy.

And I learned how to guide qualified prospects through a structured series of conversations.

Sales became less about how many people I could get in front of …

… And more about the quality of the prospect, the quality of the offer, and the quality of the process.

The Results Reversed

Instead of scheduling 16 random appointments and closing none of them …

… I could conduct fewer appointments with better-qualified prospects and close far more sales.

In some cases, five strong appointments could produce five new customers.

I didn’t need more opportunities to improvise.

I needed better opportunities moving through a better process.

That realization revolutionized the way I sold.

But it also led me to an even more important question:

Could I build the process so well that selling no longer depended on my memory, improvisation, or personal talent?

Could someone else understand it?

Could someone else follow it?

Could someone else produce the same result?

That’s the purpose of Phase 1: Sales Independent of You™.

The 4 Steps That Make Selling
Independent of You Possible

The next four steps establish the foundation for a selling process that someone other than you, the owner, can understand, follow, and eventually replicate.

Step 1: Bullseye Buyer Blueprint™

Identify the specific prospects your business is best equipped to serve ...

... And who are most likely to value, afford, and purchase what you offer.

Step 2: Prime Offer System™

Package one primary offer around a clear result your Bullseye Buyer wants

and will pay for.

Step 3: Manifesto Brand System™

Create a clear teaching framework that establishes your authority, educates prospects, answers their objections, and shows them why your approach is the right solution.

Step 4: Prime Seller System™

Guide qualified prospects through a structured process consisting of the Free Orientation, Free Strategy Session, and Prime Onboarding Session.

What Happens When All 4 Steps Work Together

When all four steps are in place …

… You know exactly whom you want to sell to.

You know exactly what you want to sell them.

Your prospects understand the problem, the solution, and what makes your approach different.

And your team has a structured process for guiding qualified prospects toward a confident decision.

The result is not simply a better way for you to sell.

It's a selling process someone else can eventually follow and replicate.

But before you can build that process …

… You must answer one foundational question:

Who, exactly, was the process built to serve?

That’s where Step 1 begins.

Let’s build your Bullseye Buyer Blueprint™.

STEP 1: BULLSEYE BUYER BLUEPRINT™

Stop Selling to Everyone and Start Selling to the Right People: Why Every Selling Process Must Begin With the Buyer

Before you can create a repeatable selling process, you must know exactly who that process was built to serve.

If every prospect is different …

… Every sales conversation will be different.

One prospect has one problem.

The next prospect has another.

They need different solutions.

They respond to different messages.

They have different reasons for buying.

That forces the salesperson to begin every opportunity from scratch.

And when every sale requires a different message, offer, presentation, and solution …

… Sales depend on the owner's experience and instincts.

A standardized selling process requires something more fundamental:

A standardized buyer.

That’s why the Bullseye Buyer Blueprint™ is the first step in the Prime Selling System™.

I Tried to Sell to Anyone Who Would Listen

When I first started selling information technology services …

… I tried to sell to practically every business owner who would speak with me.

I didn’t have a Bullseye Buyer.

I was looking for anyone who might say yes.

The problem was that many of the businesses I signed were small.

Some generated tiny commissions.

On average, I earned approximately $10 per month from each account.

Every opportunity was also different.

Because I was selling to all kinds of businesses …

They had different problems …

… Different needs and reasons for buying.

That made it difficult to standardize my message, presentation, or solution.

Each time I met with a prospect …

… I had to figure out what to sell them.

Each proposal was different.

Each presentation was different.

And each new account produced a different financial result.

I was making sales …

… But I wasn’t building a selling process someone else could follow.

Then I Started Doing the Math

Eventually, I stopped looking only at the number of accounts I was signing …

… And started studying the value of those accounts.

I realized that businesses with more computers needed more information technology services.

They were more likely to need:

Ongoing maintenance.
Network support.
Server management.
 Data security.

And help solving larger technology problems.

Those businesses also generated significantly larger commissions.

So, I established one simple qualification for the businesses I would pursue:

They needed to have at least ten computers.

That one decision changed everything.

Are You Pursuing ‘Anyone’ Who Might Say Yes?

Think about the prospects you pursue today.

Do they share clear characteristics that make them more likely to need, value, and purchase your solution?

Or are you still approaching practically anyone who might say yes?

Scroll down and type BULLSEYE or EVERYONE in the comments.

Better Qualification Changed the Economics

Once I established that qualification, I stopped randomly approaching every business owner who would listen.

I focused on businesses more likely to need …

… And value …

… What we offered.

My average monthly commission increased from approximately $10 per account …

… To approximately $100 per account.

That was a tenfold increase in each account's average value.

I didn’t need 100 small accounts to produce $1,000 in monthly commissions.

10 Bullseye Buyers could produce the same result.

That meant I could conduct fewer sales conversations …

… Serve fewer accounts …

… And generate substantially more revenue.

But the financial improvement was only part of the benefit.

A Standardized Buyer Creates
a Standardized Sales Process

The businesses I began pursuing shared similar problems.

That allowed me to build our solution around those problems.

I could create a more relevant message.

I could present a more consistent offer.

And I could begin standardizing the sales presentation.

Instead of reinventing the conversation for every prospect …

… I could build a process around the problems our best buyers shared.

Prospects could immediately recognize that our solution was designed for a business like theirs.

That made the message more relevant.

It made the presentation more persuasive.

And it made the entire selling process easier to repeat.

That experience taught me one of the most important principles behind the Prime Selling System™:

You can’t build a standardized selling system until you identify a standardized buyer.

Your Bullseye Buyer Shapes
Everything That Follows

Your Bullseye Buyer determines:

Who you approach.
What problems you address.·
How you position your solution.
What proof you present.
Which objections you prepare for.

And eventually, how you market and sell efficiently.

The clearer the buyer becomes …

… The easier it becomes to build every other part of the selling process.

Your message can speak directly to their situation.

Your offer can solve a problem they already recognize.

Your presentation can address the questions they are already asking.

And another salesperson can learn to follow the process …

… Because the process no longer changes completely from one opportunity to the next.

A Larger Market DoesN't Always
Create More Opportunity

Many owner-operators resist narrowing their market because they fear losing potential customers.

They tell themselves:

“Everyone could use what we sell.

“I don’t want to turn anyone away.

“The more people I target, the more opportunities I’ll create.”

But a larger audience does not necessarily create more qualified opportunities.

When you try to speak to everyone …

… Your message becomes less relevant to the people most likely to buy.

Your marketing attracts people with different needs, budgets, and urgency levels.

Your sales team spends time sorting through prospects who were never a strong fit.

And your sales presentation becomes too broad to feel personal.

You don’t need everyone to recognize themselves in your message.

You need the right people to recognize themselves immediately.

Proof:
A Financial Planner Found His
Bullseye Buyer

I saw this happen with one of my clients, a financial planner.

He wanted to attract people preparing for retirement.

Initially, his message was broad:

“We help people build their retirement plans.”

It sounded reasonable …

… But it could apply to practically anyone.

It could attract someone retiring next year …

… Or someone who was still 20 years away.

It could attract someone with substantial savings to invest …

… Or someone who was only beginning to explore their options.

Because the message spoke to everybody thinking about retirement …

… It didn’t speak directly to anyone.

The client struggled to generate qualified leads affordably.

Even when prospects responded, many weren’t financially qualified or ready to take action.

So, we stopped and asked a more important question:

Who is the Bullseye Buyer?

Two Qualifications Changed the Message

We narrowed the answer to two defining characteristics:

The prospect was preparing to retire within the next five years.

And they had at least $250,000 in savings available to invest.

That changed everything.

Now, when the right person encountered the message …

… They could immediately recognize themselves:

“I’m planning to retire within five years.”

“I have at least $250,000 that I need to invest.”

“This is meant for me.”

The message no longer needed to appeal to everyone thinking about retirement.

It needed to speak directly to the smaller group of people the financial planner was best equipped to help.

The Result:
Better Leads and a Repeatable Presentation

The clearer targeting helped the client attract more qualified leads at an affordable cost.

Because those prospects shared similar goals, concerns, and financial questions …

… We could also create a standardized sales presentation that spoke directly to their situation.

Prospects felt understood.

The presentation addressed the issues they were already thinking about.

That helped the client close more leads …

… And generate more business.

The lesson was simple:

When you know exactly who you’re selling to …

… You can create a message and sales presentation that feels as though it was created specifically for them.

That’s the power of the Bullseye Buyer Blueprint™.

The Right Buyer Needs the Right Offer

Your Bullseye Buyer Blueprint™ tells you exactly whom you want to sell to.

You understand their situation.

You recognize the problems they share.

And you know what separates a qualified opportunity from everyone else.

But identifying the right buyer is only the beginning.

Now you must decide exactly what you want to sell them.

If your business continues offering too many unrelated services …

… Your message will become scattered again.

Your salespeople won’t know which solution to lead with.

And prospects may struggle to understand the primary result you provide.

That leads to Step 2 …

… The Prime Offer System™.

STEP 2: PRIME OFFER SYSTEM™

Why the Right Buyer Still Needs the Right Offer

Your Bullseye Buyer Blueprint™ tells you exactly whom you want to sell to.

But identifying the right buyer doesn’t automatically give you a repeatable selling process.

You must also decide exactly what you want to sell them.

If every customer receives a different combination of products and services …

… Every sale remains different.

Your salesperson still has to determine which solution to recommend.

Your presentation still changes from one prospect to the next.

And you still have no reliable way to predict what each new sale will be worth.

A standardized buyer gives your selling process a clear audience.

A standardized offer gives it a clear destination.

That’s why the Prime Offer System™ comes next.

Every Sale Was Different

When I first started selling information technology services …

… I was primarily focused on making the next sale.

If a prospect had a problem …

… And I thought we could solve it …

… I would create a custom plan for them.

That flexibility helped me close business.

But it created another problem:

Every sale was different.

One customer might need a small service that generated a modest commission.

Another might need something more substantial.

Because there was no standard offer …

… I never knew what my next sale would be worth.

My income was extremely volatile.

I could work hard …

… Make sales …

… And still have no reliable way to forecast how much revenue those sales would produce.

Identifying businesses with at least ten computers as my Bullseye Buyer gave me greater focus.

But I still needed to determine what I would consistently sell them.

I Looked for the Problem Our Best Buyers Shared

So, I sat down and asked myself:

“What problems do all these businesses have in common …

… And which of those problems are they willing to pay us to solve?”

The answers became clear.

They had servers and interconnected networks.

They cared about the speed and reliability of their computers.

They needed data security and disaster recovery.

Most importantly …

… They couldn’t afford prolonged downtime because downtime cost them money.

The businesses were different.

But the problems that made them valuable customers were remarkably similar.

That gave me something to build a standardized offer around.

The Right Offer Was Already
Inside Our Custom Plans

I realized that the foundation of the right offer was already inside the custom plans we had been creating.

We didn’t need to invent something completely new.

We needed to identify which solution best addressed the problems our Bullseye Buyers shared.

Instead of continuing to reinvent the solution for every prospect …

… I took the plan that best addressed those shared problems …

… And made it the offer we would consistently sell.

That became our sweet spot.

It was valuable to the customer.

It was financially worthwhile for us.

And it was something we knew we could successfully fulfill …

… Without promising the moon.

That solution became our Prime Offer™.

Does Every Sale Begin From Scratch?

Think about the products and services your business sells today.

Does your team know which offer to lead with?

Or does every prospect receive a different recommendation based on whatever they happen to ask for?

Scroll down and type PRIME OFFER or CUSTOM in the comments.

A Prime Offer Gives the
Sales Conversation a Destination

Once we established our Prime Offer™ …

… Our sales conversations had a destination.

We no longer had to begin each opportunity by asking:

“What could we sell this customer?”

We already knew the solution we believed would create the greatest value for our Bullseye Buyer.

The goal wasn’t to force every prospect into the same package.

The goal was to start with the solution we believed would best serve the right prospect.

That changed the conversation.

We could focus the message.

We could standardize the presentation.

We could prepare for the same questions and objections.

And another salesperson could learn how to guide a qualified prospect toward the same primary solution.

Predictable Offers Create Predictable Revenue

Before the Prime Offer™ …

… I never knew what the next sale would be worth.

One sale might generate a small commission.

Another might generate more.

Revenue remained a surprise.

After we established the Prime Offer™ …

… Each new client could generate approximately $1,000 or more per month in commissions.

For the first time, I could calculate what three new clients would mean financially.

I could calculate what ten new clients would mean.

Or twenty.

I could forecast revenue.

I could make informed decisions.

And I finally felt as though I had control over my income …

… Instead of simply hoping the next sale would be a good one.

That experience taught me an important lesson:

When every sale is different …

… Revenue remains a surprise.

But when one clear, valuable, and scalable offer sits at the center of your business …

… Growth becomes something you can plan.

That’s the power of a Prime Offer™.

Your Prime Offer Sits at the Center of the Business

A strong Prime Offer™ brings several important factors together.

It addresses a problem your Bullseye Buyer already recognizes.

It creates meaningful value for the customer.

It generates enough revenue to be financially worthwhile for the business.

You can deliver it consistently without making promises you can’t keep.

And it gives your salespeople a clear solution they can confidently recommend.

When those factors come together …

… The offer benefits everyone.

The customer receives a more complete solution.

The salesperson knows what to sell.

The business can standardize fulfillment.

And the owner can begin predicting what growth will produce.

More Choices Don’t Always Help the Customer

Many owner-operators believe offering more options will help them sell more.

They tell themselves:

“We should have something for everyone.

“Customers like choices.

“If the primary offer feels too expensive, we should lead with something smaller.”

But too many choices can make the selling process harder for everyone.

Your salesperson has to explain every option.

Your customer has to compare solutions they may not fully understand.

The sales conversation loses direction.

And the customer may select the least expensive option …

… Rather than the solution most likely to produce the result they need.

Customers don’t always need more choices.

Sometimes, they need a confident recommendation.

Proof:
One Clear Offer Replaced
Ten Different Services

One of my clients came to me because his income felt like a roller coaster.

Some months were good.

Other months were slow.

He felt as though he was constantly at the mercy of the market …

… And whatever his customers happened to want at the time.

His business offered approximately ten different services.

Because customers could choose from so many options …

… Every sale was different.

There was no consistency …

… And very little control.

So, I asked him a simple question:

“If you could sell only one of these services …

… Which one would you choose?”

He stopped and thought about it.

Then he pointed to one comprehensive package.

“This one,” he said.

“It creates the most value for our customers …

… And it generates the most revenue for the business.”

My next question was obvious:

“Then why aren’t you focusing on selling it?”

The Fear of Being Too Expensive

His answer was something I hear from many business owners:

“A lot of customers think it’s too expensive.

“They usually want to begin with one of the smaller services and work their way up to it.”

But that approach had a problem.

The smaller services addressed pieces of the customer’s problem.

The comprehensive package could solve the problem most efficiently.

By leading with the smaller services …

… He wasn’t necessarily helping customers make the best decision.

He was allowing the fear of hearing “That’s too expensive” to determine what he recommended.

Lead With the Solution You Believe Is Best

So, I gave him a new direction:

“From now on, lead with this package.

“Make it the primary offer you recommend.

“If the customer says no, you can discuss one of the smaller options …

“… But begin with the solution you genuinely believe will serve them best.”

He implemented the change.

Instead of presenting ten different services as though they were equally important …

… He began leading every sales conversation toward one clear offer.

And something interesting happened:

His customers began following his lead.

When he confidently recommended the comprehensive package as the best solution …

… More customers chose it.

The Result:
Simpler Sales and More Predictable Revenue

The business became simpler because he no longer felt responsible for selling ten different things at once.

His sales conversations had a clear destination.

His customers were happier because they received the more complete solution.

And the company generated more revenue.

That experience reinforced an important lesson:

A Prime Offer™ doesn’t have to be the only thing you sell.

It’s the primary solution you believe will create the greatest value for your Bullseye Buyer …

… And the offer you confidently lead them toward.

If the customer decides it isn’t the right fit …

… You can discuss another option.

But you begin with the solution you genuinely believe they need.

When you stop asking customers to navigate everything you could sell …

… And begin recommending what they actually need …

… Your sales process becomes simpler.

Your customers receive a better result.

And your revenue becomes more predictable.

Which product or service would you choose if you could lead with only one?

The Right Offer Still Needs the Right Message

Your Bullseye Buyer Blueprint™ identifies exactly whom you want to sell to.

Your Prime Offer System™ gives you the primary solution you want to sell them.

Now you know:

Who the sales process was built to serve.

What problems they share.

And which offer you believe will create the greatest value for them.

But your prospects still need to understand why that offer matters.

They need to recognize the real problem.

They need to understand the solution.

They need to see what makes your approach different.

And they need answers to the questions and objections that could prevent them from moving forward.

If all that education still depends on you explaining everything during the sales conversation …

… The process still depends on you.

That leads to Step 3 …

… The Manifesto Brand System™.

STEP 3: Manifesto brand system™

Turn What You Know Into Content
That Sells INDEPENDENT OF You

Your Bullseye Buyer Blueprint™ identifies exactly whom you want to sell to.

Your Prime Offer System™ gives you the primary solution you want to sell them.

But even the right offer won’t sell itself.

Your prospects still need to understand:

The problem.

Why it matters.

What could happen if they ignore it.

How the solution works.

What makes your approach different.

And why they should trust you to help them.

If that education begins only after the prospect meets with you …

… Every sales conversation still begins from zero.

You must explain everything.

You must establish the value.

You must answer every objection.

And you must personally persuade the prospect to move forward.

That means the sale still depends on you.

But what if your knowledge could begin educating prospects before the appointment?

What if your message could establish your authority …

… Answer important questions …

… And create desire for your Prime Offer™ …

… Without requiring you to be present?

That’s the purpose of the Manifesto Brand System™.

More Activity Wasn’t Solving the Problem

When I first started in sales …

… I played the volume game.

My goal was to schedule as many appointments as possible.

Sometimes, I scheduled 15 or 16 appointments in a single week.

The problem was that almost nobody bought.

My closing ratio was extremely low and inconsistent.

Every once in a while, someone would say yes …

… But I couldn’t depend on it.

Looking back, I was trying to compensate for my lack of sales experience by doing more.

More prospecting.

More appointments.

More presentations.

But more activity wasn’t solving the real problem.

Prospects Saw Another Salesperson
Who Wanted Their Time

Most prospects saw me as another salesperson who wanted their time.

Before I could explain what we did …

… Or why it mattered …

… Their defenses were already up.

They didn’t want another appointment.

They didn’t want another sales presentation.

And they certainly didn’t want someone to pressure them to buy.

I knew that if I could get in front of them and explain everything …

… Some might understand the value.

But convincing them to give me that opportunity was difficult.

The education they needed was trapped inside my head.

And they had to agree to an appointment before they could receive it.

What if Prospects Could Learn
Before the Appointment?

I remember thinking:

“If these business owners could understand what we do before I ask for the appointment …

… They might actually want to speak with me.”

That question changed how I thought about sales.

What if the appointment didn’t have to begin the sales conversation?

What if something else could begin educating the prospect first?

What if they could understand the problem …

… Recognize the value …

… And become interested in the solution …

… Before I ever asked them to meet with me?

When does your sales education begin?

Before the appointment …

Conventional Sales Advice Told Me to Hold Back

At the time, that idea went against much of the sales advice I was hearing.

The conventional wisdom was:

Don’t give prospects too much information.

Go directly for the appointment.

Push for the close.

Don’t let educational material slow down the sale.

The assumption was that information gave the prospect another reason to delay.

If they wanted answers …

… They needed to meet with the salesperson.

But that approach ignored how prospects felt.

They didn’t know enough to want the appointment.

They didn’t yet understand the problem.

They couldn’t see why the solution mattered.

And they had no reason to believe I was different from every other salesperson asking for their time.

Withholding information didn’t create urgency.

It preserved uncertainty.

I Decided to Try the Opposite

Instead of withholding information …

… I decided to educate prospects before asking them to buy.

I created an information technology Consumer’s Guide for my Bullseye Buyer.

The guide explained the 12 things a business owner should consider when choosing an information technology company.

I didn’t call it a Brand Manifesto then.

But it was an early version of what would eventually become one.

It educated prospects about the problems they should be thinking about.

It showed them what to look for in a provider.

It helped them understand the value of solving those problems correctly.

And it introduced the standards behind our approach.

The Consumer’s Guide allowed me to share what I knew …

… Without requiring me to explain it every time personally.

I even promoted it on my business card.

The Guide Went Where I Couldn’t

One day, I attended a Chamber of Commerce networking event.

While I was there …

… I met the owner of a nine-figure recreational-vehicle business in Oregon.

I handed him my business card.

He noticed the Consumer’s Guide and said:

“Eric, this sounds interesting.

“We’re considering hiring a third-party information technology company …

“… And I’d like to know what we should be looking for.”

I told him I would send it over.

I emailed him the guide …

… And didn’t think much more about it.

One week later, I saw him again at the same networking event.

This time, he walked up to me and said something I’ll never forget:

“Eric, I want to sleep better at night.

“Let’s get together.”

I immediately knew he had read the guide.

He Repeated My Language Back to Me

“Sleep better at night knowing your information technology is taken care of,” was one of the sections inside the guide.

He wasn’t merely repeating a clever phrase.

He had absorbed the problem.

He understood why it mattered.

And he had adopted the language I used to describe the desired result.

The guide had gone where I couldn’t.

It educated him without requiring me to be present.

It established my authority before the appointment.

And it turned a cold sales conversation …

… Into a meeting he wanted to have.

For once, I didn’t have to chase the appointment.

The prospect asked for it.

He eventually became one of our largest clients …

… And one of the best sales experiences of my career.

Content Can Go Where You Can’t

That experience taught me something I’ve never forgotten:

Content can go where you can’t.

It can enter a prospect’s office when you’re somewhere else.

It can explain your approach when you’re serving another client.

It can answer questions when you’re spending time with your family.

And it can keep educating you after the workday ends.

A Brand Manifesto and Consumer’s Guide can:

Educate prospects.

Establish your authority.

Address common objections.

Introduce your process.

And build desire for your Prime Offer™ …

… Before you ever speak with them.

When a prospect begins repeating your language back to you …

… The sales conversation has already begun.

A Manifesto Gives Your Knowledge a Structure

Most owner-operators possess valuable knowledge.

You understand the problems your customers face.

You know the mistakes they make.

You know what they should consider before choosing a solution.

And you know the process required to produce the right result.

But if that knowledge remains inside your head …

… It can only influence prospects when you’re personally present.

Your Brand Manifesto turns that knowledge into a clear teaching framework.

It organizes what you believe.

It explains how you solve the problem.

And it gives prospects a logical path they can understand and follow.

Your Consumer’s Guide then places that teaching into a form your Bullseye Buyer can use before the sales conversation.

Together, they turn your expertise into a sales asset.

Your Consumer’s Guide Isn’t a Brochure

A brochure tells prospects about your company.

It describes your products.

It lists your services.

And it explains why your business is great.

A Consumer’s Guide does something different.

It helps prospects make a better decision.

It teaches them:

What problems to recognize.

What mistakes to avoid.

What questions to ask.

What standards to expect.

And what steps lead to the result they want.

The prospect receives useful information whether they buy from you or not.

But as they learn …

… They also begin understanding why your approach makes sense.

You’re not simply promoting your business.

You’re teaching the prospect how to think about the decision.

Education Doesn’t Slow Down the Sale

Some business owners still worry that giving prospects information will delay the decision.

They tell themselves:

“If I give them too much to read, they won’t schedule the appointment.

“I should save the best information for the sales presentation.

“If they understand everything, they might try to solve the problem themselves.”

But qualified prospects don’t lose interest because they understand the problem more clearly.

They gain confidence.

They recognize the value.

They begin trusting the process.

And they arrive at the sales conversation better prepared to decide.

Education doesn’t slow down the right sale …

… It removes the uncertainty that was slowing it down.

Proof:
The Consumer’s Guide Answered
the Unspoken Questions

One day, I received an excited voicemail from one of my clients …

… A tile contractor.

He had been speaking with a prospect who was interested in his services …

… But wasn’t sure whether to move forward.

The prospect was on the fence.

My client had already explained the service.

But something was still preventing the prospect from deciding.

Instead of pushing for another sales conversation …

… He sent the prospect his Consumer’s Guide.

The prospect read it.

Then something happened that surprised him.

The prospect contacted him and explained that the guide had addressed several important concerns they had never discussed during their previous conversations.

Those concerns had been standing between the prospect and the decision …

… But they had never been spoken aloud.

The Consumer’s Guide answered them anyway.

Prospects Don’t Tell You
Everything They’re Thinking

Prospects don’t always reveal every reason they hesitate.

They may have questions they never ask.

Concerns they never mention.

Or objections they don’t feel comfortable raising during the sales conversation.

A salesperson can only answer the questions the prospect expresses.

But a well-designed Consumer’s Guide can anticipate those questions …

… And provide the answers before the prospect asks.

That’s exactly what happened here.

The guide continued the sales conversation after my client left the room.

It explained what the prospect needed to understand.

It addressed concerns the prospect hadn’t expressed.

And it gave the prospect the confidence to move forward.

The Result:
The Guide Helped Close the Sale

The information inside the Consumer’s Guide closed the gap …

… And helped close the sale.

That was why my client sounded so excited in the voicemail.

He had just experienced the power of content that could sell …

… Without requiring him to be there.

The lesson was simple:

Your guide keeps educating after the meeting ends.

It keeps building trust when you’re not in the room.

It addresses questions your prospects may never ask you directly.

And sometimes …

… It finishes the sales conversation for you.

Education Needs a Clear Next Step

Your Bullseye Buyer Blueprint™ identifies whom you want to sell to.

Your Prime Offer System™ gives you the primary solution you want to sell them.

And your Manifesto Brand System™ educates prospects, establishes your authority, and builds desire for that solution …

… Before you ever speak with them.

But that creates another question:

What happens after they read the Consumer’s Guide?

My guide was getting prospects interested.

But if the next step was a traditional consultation or sales presentation …

… Much of that momentum disappeared.

Prospects still needed a clear, comfortable way to explore how the process applied to their business.

The guide had opened the door.

Now they needed someone to lead them through it.

That leads to Step 4 …

… The Prime Seller System™.

STEP 4: PRIME SELLER SYSTEM™

Turn Educated Prospects
Into Confident Customers

Your Manifesto Brand System™ begins educating prospects before you ever speak with them.

Your Brand Manifesto introduces the process.

Your Consumer’s Guide answers important questions.

And your content helps prospects understand why your Prime Offer™ matters.

But education alone doesn’t complete the sale.

Prospects still need a clear next step.

They need an opportunity to explore how the process applies to their situation.

They need answers to their specific questions.

And they need a comfortable way to determine whether working with you is the right decision.

If the next step is a generic consultation …

… The sales conversation may feel like it’s starting from zero again.

The prospect becomes guarded.

The salesperson begins explaining.

And the natural momentum created by the Consumer’s Guide starts disappearing.

The Prime Seller System™ protects that momentum.

Instead of abruptly switching from education to selling …

… It continues guiding the prospect through a structured decision process.

That’s why the Prime Seller System™ completes Phase 1: Sales Independent of You™.

My Consumer’s Guide Was Creating Interest

My Consumer’s Guide was getting people interested.

But I still had a problem.

What happened after they read it?

My instinct was to do what I had been taught:

Offer a free consultation or strategy session.

Sometimes, prospects resisted.

Sometimes, they agreed to meet …

… But when we got together, I still spent much of the appointment explaining our approach.

One meeting became two.

Sometimes three.

I was tired of chasing prospects.

I was tired of following up.

And I was tired of repeating the same explanations.

The guide had created momentum.

Why did the next step sometimes feel like starting over?

What If I Continued the Education?

Then I had a thought:

What if I continued the education …

… Instead of switching into a sales conversation?

The prospect had already shown interest in the process.

They had read the Consumer’s Guide.

They had learned something valuable.

And they wanted to understand more.

Why replace that experience with a traditional consultation?

Why not give them exactly what they wanted next?

I took the content from my guide …

… And turned it into a presentation.

It became a one-on-one Free Orientation that helped prospects understand how the process could apply to their business.

The guide introduced the ideas.

The orientation brought those ideas to life.

A Prospect Wanted to Understand the Process

Soon, I had an opportunity to try it.

A prospect had read the guide …

… And was excited about what they had learned.

Now they wanted to understand what I could do for them.

Instead of immediately presenting my services …

… I offered to walk them through the 12 steps personally.

We would explore how those steps fit their situation.

We would answer their questions.

And we would determine whether the process made sense for their business.

They were excited.

They already liked the process.

Understanding how it could work for them was exactly what they wanted next.

For once …

… They wanted the meeting as much as I did.

The Conversation Felt Natural

We met in person.

At the beginning, I explained what we would do.

We would walk through the process together.

We would explore how it applied to their business.

And if they felt it was a good fit …

… We could discuss ways to work together afterward.

There was no obligation to move forward.

Then we went through the presentation.

The conversation felt natural.

I wasn’t trying to force interest.

The interest was already there.

My job was to help the prospect see how the process connected to their business.

They asked questions.

We discussed their situation.

And together, we explored what implementing the process could look like.

By the end of the orientation …

… They wanted to know what working together would involve.

Does Your Next Step Continue the Education?

Think about what happens after a prospect reads your content or expresses interest.

Do you continue guiding them through the decision?

Or do you immediately switch into a traditional sales pitch?

Scroll down and type GUIDANCE or SALES PITCH in the comments.

One Conversation Prepared Them for the Next

During the orientation, we discussed the general cost and timeline.

The prospect understood the investment.

They understood what implementation would require.

And they could decide whether moving forward made sense.

They scheduled a Free Strategy Session.

When we met again …

… The difference was remarkable.

They already understood the approach.

They knew the investment.

They had considered the timing.

The Free Strategy Session didn’t need to begin with another presentation.

I could focus on understanding their business.

I asked questions.

I confirmed that we were aligned.

We finalized the arrangements.

And before the meeting ended …

… We scheduled their Prime Onboarding Session.

There were no objections to overcome.

No pushback.

No pressure.

Just excitement …

… And one question:

“When can we get started?”

The Most Effortless
Sales Experience I Ever Had

I remember thinking that this was one of the most effortless sales experiences I had ever had.

The prospect didn’t feel pressured.

I didn’t feel as though I was chasing the sale.

And neither of us had to force the conversation forward.

The process had done its job.

The Consumer’s Guide created interest.

The Free Orientation built understanding.

The Free Strategy Session confirmed the fit.

And the Prime Onboarding Session created a clear starting point.

Ever since …

… My goal has been to recreate that experience with other prospects.

The difference wasn’t a stronger closing technique.

It wasn’t more pressure.

And it wasn’t a clever objection-handling script.

It was giving an interested person a clear, comfortable way to understand the solution …

… Before asking them to buy.

The guide had opened the door.

The Prime Seller System™ helped them see themselves moving through it.

The Prime Seller System™ Gives Every Conversation a Job

Traditional sales processes often ask one conversation to do everything.

Build trust.

Understand the prospect.

Explain the problem.

Present the solution.

Answer objections.

Discuss the investment.

And close the sale.

That places enormous pressure on the salesperson.

It also asks the prospect to process too much information at once.

The Prime Seller System™ separates the decision into three clear stages.

Each conversation has one primary job.

The Free Orientation Builds Understanding

The Free Orientation continues the education that began with the Consumer’s Guide.

It walks prospects through your process.

It helps them understand the problem.

It shows them how the solution applies to their situation.

It also lets them decide whether they want to explore working together.

The purpose isn’t to pressure the prospect into buying.

The purpose is to help them understand.

The Free Strategy Session Confirms the Fit

Once the prospect understands the process …

… The Free Strategy Session focuses on their specific situation.

You ask questions.

You identify their needs.

You confirm that your Prime Offer™ is the right solution.

You clarify the investment and timeline.

And together, you determine whether moving forward makes sense.

The prospect arrives prepared …

… Because the orientation has already completed much of the education.

The Prime Onboarding Session Creates Momentum

Once the prospect decides to move forward …

… The Prime Onboarding Session gives the decision a clear starting point.

You schedule it immediately.

The customer knows what happens next.

The business has a deadline for beginning the work.

And the excitement created during the sales process carries directly into implementation.

The sale doesn’t end with a signed agreement.

It moves naturally into the first step of delivering the result.

A Consultation Often Begins in the Wrong Place

Many owner-operators begin by offering a free consultation.

That sounds helpful.

But “consultation” can mean almost anything.

The prospect may expect free advice.

The salesperson may expect a sales opportunity.

Neither person knows exactly where the conversation is going.

So, the salesperson begins asking questions …

… Then starts explaining the service …

… Then tries to establish value …

… Then attempts to close.

The entire sale depends on what the salesperson remembers to say in the moment.

And every conversation feels different.

A structured orientation changes the starting point.

The prospect knows what they will learn.

The salesperson knows what they will teach.

And both people understand what can happen next.

That makes the sales experience easier to follow …

… And easier for another salesperson to repeat.

Selling Should Feel Like Leading

When prospects don’t understand the problem or solution …

… Salespeople feel pressure to convince them.

They push.

They persuade.

They defend the price.

They try to overcome resistance.

But when prospects arrive educated …

… The salesperson can take on a different role.

They can lead.

The prospect wants a result.

The salesperson helps them understand the path to it.

The conversation becomes less about pressure …

… And more about making an informed decision.

That creates a better experience for the prospect.

But it also creates a better experience for the salesperson.

Proof:
A Seven-Figure Business Changed
the Sales Conversation

One of my clients ran a successful seven-figure business.

But lately …

… Their team had been struggling to close deals.

Their sales process was consultative.

And their solution required explanation.

When I introduced the Free Orientation and Prime Seller System™ …

… The owner was skeptical.

Would an educational walkthrough really work for a business like theirs?

They were already successful.

Changing how their team sold felt risky.

I explained that we weren’t removing the opportunity to understand the customer.

We were helping the customer understand the solution earlier …

… So, every sales conversation wouldn’t have to begin from scratch.

We Turned Their Knowledge Into a Process

We documented their approach.

We created their Consumer’s Guide.

And we turned that content into a Free Orientation presentation.

Then the team began inviting people who received the guide to a one-on-one walkthrough.

Instead of asking prospects to book a generic consultation …

… They offered to help them understand how the process could apply to their business.

The invitation felt different.

The conversation felt different.

And the results began changing.

More leads began turning into appointments.

The increase exceeded the owner’s expectations.

And the team began closing deals again.

The Salespeople Felt the Difference

But the most revealing change came from the salespeople themselves.

They started telling the owner how different the conversations felt.

They weren’t experiencing the resistance they had grown accustomed to.

They didn’t feel as though they were pressuring prospects …

… Or forcing a decision.

They felt like they were leading.

The prospect wanted a result.

The salesperson was helping them understand the path to it.

And the team began enjoying the process.

They enjoyed learning about the prospects and their businesses.

They enjoyed answering questions.

They enjoyed explaining how the approach could help.

Instead of feeling like another salesperson trying to earn a few minutes of someone’s time …

… They felt respected for their knowledge.

They were teaching …

… And they could feel the difference in how prospects responded.

Selling no longer felt like the same uphill battle.

The Result:
A Better Experience for the Buyer and Seller

The owner wanted more appointments.

They wanted more closed business.

And the Prime Seller System™ helped produce both.

But something else emerged:

A sales team that felt better about the work itself.

That’s an often-overlooked benefit of the Prime Seller System™.

A better sales experience isn’t only better for the buyer.

When salespeople can educate, guide, and help prospects make informed decisions …

… They can take greater pride in the process.

They stop feeling like they have to push people to buy.

They start enjoying helping people move toward a result.

That makes the process easier to follow.

It makes the conversation easier to repeat.

And it gives the business a selling system that no longer depends entirely on the owner.
